What Departments Should Do Now to Prepare
a Strong, Compliant, and Competitive Application

The strongest AFG applications are built before the application opens.
Early planning helps avoid registration delays, strengthens narratives,
and ensures your request aligns with FEMA priorities.

Don’t Wait for the Deadline

Don’t wait for the window to open — start preparing now to give your department the best chance at funding success.

The FY2025 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) application cycle will be here before you know it, and now is the time to start preparing. Early preparation is one of the most important factors in a successful AFG application. We strongly encourage departments to review the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) as soon as it is released to ensure your proposed project aligns with current program priorities and funding categories. Understanding these priorities early can save valuable time and help you focus on the strongest possible request.

In addition, departments should begin gathering key data required to complete the pre-score and narrative sections. In particular, you will need to provide accurate information on the population served in your primary district, three years of call volume, staffing and training levels, fleet inventory, as well as equipment age and NFPA compliance. Besides preparing the substance of your application, it is critical to ensure that your SAM.gov registration is active and that you have access to your FEMA GO account well in advance of the application deadline. Delays with registrations or account access are common and can prevent your department from submitting an otherwise strong application if not addressed early.

At Firehouse Grants, our team of firefighter grant writers is here to help you navigate every step of the AFG process.
